Iceland Tour Itinerary – August 26 – September 3, 2026
The adventure starts in Reykjavík on August 26, 2026. If you’d like to arrive early, we can arrange additional hotel nights prior to the tour.
Day 1 – Reykjavík
Wednesday, August 26, 2026
Meals: Dinner
Most international flights arrive early in the morning. Upon arrival at Keflavík Airport, you can either meet a driver/guide (about $250) or take a shuttle (about $35) and head straight to nearby Blue Lagoon. If you are arriving prior to Day 1, we will take a bus from the hotel (included in tour cost) to the Blue Lagoon.

Here, we’ll soak in the geothermal pools with a Premium access pass (whoo hoo!), which includes three facial masks, two drinks at the lagoon bar, plus towel and bathrobe use. (Be sure to pack your swimsuit somewhere easy to grab upon arrival.)
After our morning soak, we’ll enjoy an early lunch (not included) at the LAVA Restaurant inside the spa.
Afterward, we’ll make our way north to Reykjavík where we’ll check in to our hotel. We’ll have some free time to get settled in before regrouping for a private walking food tour. Over three hours, we’ll sample our way through downtown while learning about the cuisine, culture and history of the city and the country. This tour includes plenty of tastings and will serve as dinner!
Overnight at Exeter Hotel or similar in Reykjavik.
Day 2 – Reykjavík
Thursday, August 27, 2026
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, we’ll head out for a whale-watching adventure! It’s a short walk to the harbor, where we’ll board a yacht and cruise the bay in search of whales, dolphins and porpoises—with a chance of spotting puffins, too.

After whale watching, the rest of the day is free to relax, wander, eat and shop in Reykjavík’s compact downtown.
Overnight at Exeter Hotel or similar in Reykjavik.
Day 3 – Reykjavik – Vík
Friday, August 28, 2026
Meals: Breakfast
After an early breakfast, we’ll start our South Coast tour along the Ring Road. Our first stop is Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls. We’ll walk the path behind the falls for a unique (and wet) view. You’ll definitely want your rain jacket!

Next, we’ll visit Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls with a wide curtain of water and frequent rainbows. Then it’s on to the town of Vík to explore Reynisfjara. This is where we’ll find Iceland’s iconic black-sand beach, along with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, basalt hexagonal columns and the Dyrhólaey arch. We may even see puffins perched on the cliff above!
From here, we’ll drive to a farm where we’ll have lunch (not included) and then enjoy a one-hour guided horseback ride. This is truly an authentic Icelandic experience, dating back to the Vikings, and perfect for taking in the stunning countryside.

We’ll ride purebred Icelandic horses and have views of mountains, coastline, rivers and waterfalls. Note that this activity is suitable for all skill levels, and helmets and rain gear (if needed) are provided.
After our ride, we’ll head to Katla, a woman-owned knitting shop that offers locally sourced wool products. This is an excellent place to purchase handmade items and to support a small business.
Dinner is on your own tonight, with options in Vík or at the hotel.
Overnight at Hotel Kria or similar in Vík.
Day 4 – Vík – Glacier Lagoon
Saturday, August 29, 2026
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, we’ll continue east on the Ring Road to Jökulsárlón, Iceland’s famous glacier lagoon. Here, icebergs drift from the Vatnajökull Glacier toward the sea. We’ll walk the shoreline for up-close views and great photo opps.

Afterward, we’ll have lunch (not included) at a nearby restaurant, then check in to our hotel in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free and dinner (not included) is available at the hotel (note, there are no other nearby options).
Overnight at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon or similar near Glacier Lagoon.
Day 5 – Glacier Lagoon – Vatnajökull National Park
Sunday, August 30, 2026
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, we’ll head to Diamond Beach (in Icelandic, Breiðamerkursandur – try saying THAT twice!), where icebergs from the nearby glacier wash ashore on black volcanic sand. The contrast of the crystal-clear ice against the dark sand makes this a truly magical spot and a favorite for photographers looking to capture the country’s otherworldly beauty.

Next, we’ll visit Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon for a Zodiac boat ride. We’ll glide across the blue waters past icebergs of all shapes and sizes. This is an excellent way to get up close to this ever-changing landscape.
Afterward, we’ll stop for lunch at a charming café known for its stunning photography (taken by the owner), delicious food and excellent coffee.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel to relax. Dinner (not included) is available at the hotel (note, there are no other nearby options).
Overnight at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon or similar near Glacier Lagoon.
Day 6 – Glacier Lagoon – Hella (yup, Hella)
Monday, August 31, 2026
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, we’ll drive southwest back toward Vík, stopping first at Svartifoss (Black Waterfall) in Skaftafell. This small but striking waterfall is framed by black hexagonal basalt columns, geological formations that inspired the Hallgrímskirkja Church in Reykjavík.
Next, we’ll visit Svínafellsjökull Glacier, a dramatic location featured in Game of Thrones and Batman Begins.
Lunch is in Vík at one of Iceland’s favorite pizza spots! Yum! Afterward, we’ll have a chance to visit the Icewear outlet where you can shop for your favorite wool items at a discount!
We’ll then continue west on the Ring Road, arriving in Hella where we’ll check in to our hotel. Dinner (not included) is available at the hotel (note, there are no other nearby options).
Overnight at Hotel Ranga or similar in Hella.
Day 7 – Hella – Golden Circle – Reykjavík
Tuesday, September 1, 2026
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, we’ll head west to the Golden Circle, starting at Thingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.
Next, we’ll explore the Haukadalur geothermal area, home to hot springs, fumaroles and geysers—including the famous Great Geysir and Strokkur, which erupts 80–100 feet every 8–10 minutes.

From here, it’s a short drive to Gullfoss Waterfall, where a path brings us close to this dramatic cascade which plunges over 100 feet into a canyon (get your raincoat out again because we can get within spraying distance of this one!).
Lunch is at Friðheimar Tomato Farm, a farm-to-fork restaurant where all dishes—from appetizers to desserts—feature hydroponically grown tomatoes. We’ll also tour the greenhouse and learn about its year-round operations.
After our meal, we’ll stop at Kerið Volcanic Crater for a short walk along the rim and down to the lake’s mesmerizing aquamarine waters.

On our way back to Reykjavík, we’ll make a fun stop along the way at the home of a local woman. Here, we’ll create our own Icelandic Wool Monster! This hands-on visit supports a woman-owned business and gives us some time to connect with some locals. We get the added benefit of making our own one-of-a-kind souvenir.
Afterward, we’ll continue to the city and check in to our hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner is on your own tonight, with plenty of nearby options ranging from traditional Icelandic fare to more eclectic choices.
If the weather is clear tonight, we can book a Northern Lights tour (approximately $110, not included). We’ll keep our eyes on the weather in the week leading up to this evening to see if the skies are conducive for viewing. Yes, it’s possible to see them even in the summer, so we’ll cross our fingers on this!
Overnight at Exeter Hotel or similar in Reykjavík.
Day 8 – Reykjavík
Wednesday, September 2, 2026
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After exploring Iceland’s south, today is a free day to explore Reykjavík on your own. Some suggestions include:
* Going on a complementary whale-watching tour if we missed whales on the first trip.
* Joining a free walking tour (tips appreciated) to see anything you may have missed previously.
* Shopping for souvenirs, including Icelandic wool sweaters at thrift stores.
* Exploring the city by foot and admiring its unique architecture.
* Relaxing with a spa day at the nearby Sky Lagoon.
* Hopping from bakery to bakery for delicious treats. YUM!

Tonight, we’ll gather for a final group dinner at a special restaurant!
